After finishing second in her career debut at Fair Grounds Dec. 18, Hightap paired up sharp victories at the New Orleans oval Jan. 17 and Feb. 21, but she didn’t quite handle a major class jump when finishing seventh in the GIII Honeybee S. at Oaklawn Mar. 15. The grey filly was given some time to regroup and responded with a 3 1/4-length victory in the GIII Dogwood S. at Churchill Downs May 30, an effort that made her the second choice to Grade I winner Hooh Why (Cloud Hopping) in this test under the lights. Allowed to settle into stride several lengths from the front, Hightap let Hooh Why get first run as the field straightened into the lane. She found her best stride approaching the furlong marker and, with rider Shaun Bridgmohan just waving the stick at her, surged clear and maintained a safe margin to the wire.
