Trainer Mark Casse recorded his fifth win in the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine Saturday, when the promising Blueblood prevailed over another son of City Zip, Tenacity Zip, in the five-furlong dash for 2-year-olds.
Blueblood ($3.30) attended the pace on the outside under Patrick Husbands, as Tenacity Zip got the opening quarter in 22.59 and the half in 46. Blueblood proceeded to wear down Tenacity Zip in the final sixteenth, scoring by three-quarters of a length, in a time of 58.37.
Tigerbeach finished two lengths back in third. He was followed by Afterburner, Adios Muchacho and Like What I See.
Blueblood, a $300,000 yearling purchase by Fox Hill Farm, earned $72,000 of the $112,000 purse.
“He’s done everything right so far,” assistant trainer Kathryn Sullivan said. “He’s been really professional. Two wins in two starts. He just powered right past (Tenacity Zip). I think he’ll only get better.”
