Warrendale graduate, Gayego (c, 4, Gilded Time–Devils Lake, by Lost Code) unleashed a powerful stretch run to post a career high in the GI Ancient Title. Acquired by Godolphin last year, the dark bay won this year’s G3 Mahab Al Shimaal at Nad Al Sheba and was second in the G2 Godolphin Mile. He entered this spot off a victory in an optional claimer at Saratoga Aug. 17 in his first start since his return from Dubai. Allowed to race off the early pace here, Gayego rallied on the far outside under Garrett Gomez’s vigorous hand-ride to win by just over a length from Crown of Thorns (Repent) as the 6-5 favorite. Delta Storm (Storm Boot) was third.
