Under the radar entering this Classic race in Rome, Malossol stepped up to the plate to cause a minor upset under a perfectly timed ride from Fabio Branca. Campaigned in France by trainer Giuseppe Botti=s son and assistant Alessandro during the black-out in Italy this winter, the bay was placed on his first four starts culminating in a second in a mile conditions event on Chantilly=s Polytrack Mar. 23. Back in his native country for a first win in the Listed Premio Gardone at the San Siro Apr. 8, he was switched off in rear despite the early pace proving less than taxing. As Vedelago swooped on British raider Farraaj inside the final quarter, Malossol was winding up from the back and his flourish carried him past his compatriot in the final strides.
