One week after teaming to win one of Oaklawn Park‘s longest races—the 1 1/2-mile Temperence Hill Stakes—with Carlos L., trainer Mac Robertson and jockey Alex Canchari were back in the winner’s circle March 20 after taking the $150,000 Gazebo Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds, with Xtreme Racing Stables’ Sir Wellington.
“I had a really good trip, really clean trip,” Canchari said. “I just want to thank the owners Xtreme Racing and Mac Robertson for the opportunity. He’s a really nice horse. I’m just lucky to be a pilot on him.”

Breaking from the rail, Sir Wellington sat behind the early speed as Lock Up shot out of the gate and held a five-length advantage through an opening quarter-mile in :21.17. The winner moved within a half-length after a half-mile in :44.83, gained control at the top of the stretch, and had just enough to hold off a fast closing Jaxon Traveler by head. Game Day Play finished third, a half-length in front of 4-5 favorite Cazadero. Lock Up and Dusty Hill completed the order of finish.
Sir Wellington, a Louisiana-bred Palace colt, won in a final time of 1:10.25 on a fast track. He paid $15.40 as the 6-1 third choice.
“Jaxon Traveler got in a little trouble and ran out of real estate,” Robertson said. “We’ll take it. He’s run two good races here. I don’t see any reason not to run him back here (in the $200,000 Bachelor Stakes April 24).”
BCS Thoroughbreds bred Sir Wellington out of the Graeme Hall mare Scarlet Hall, whose last reported foal is an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Court Vision The Gazebo winner has sold three times at public auction. Paul Schaffer first purchased him as a short yearling for $20,000 out of Warrendale Sales’ consignment to the 2019 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. Pick View then bought the chestnut for $35,000 from consignor Stuart Morris at the 2019 Ocala Breeders’ Sales October Yearling Sale. In his last time through the sales ring, Xtreme Racing Stables purchased him for $55,000 from Bryan Ford’s consignment to the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale.
Sir Wellington improved his record to 3-2-0 in six starts, which includes a victory in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes last December at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, and has earned $203,370.
